Progress DBA Contract, Offsite Option

Here's an opportunity for someone who's set up to telecommute. The contract would be 6 to 8 weeks worth of DBA work for a client in Cleveland, OH. But telecommuting would work for the right individual.

As always, I hesitate to even say the word "telecommute" because I know I'll be flooded with resumes from people with a late-nineties model PC and a 56K modem or with no PC at all. You must be a serious professional consultant. That means you must have your own equipment; access to at least 2 PCs, preferably notebooks, running at least Win 2000 Pro and up-to-date virus protection with a high-speed internet connection behind a hardware firewall (router). Downtime is not an option. Acts of God will be considered as a legitimate excuse -- I hope that clarifies the seriousness of 99.99% uptime.

The rate would be $50-65/hour DOE. This is a stop gap position with a lot of opportunities to be a hero and it could easily turn into more for someone who is really serious. You need to be willing to work extra hours and get down and dirty with data. If you are a prima donna who doesn't want to wear a cell phone then please look elsewhere.

MFG/PRO Support and Administration in Akron, OH

This is a 3-month to 6-month project with a completely open rate. The client is moving from MFG/PRO to SAP and they need a "stop-gap" support person. Here's the listing:

"MFG/PRO administrator needed for Akron, OH company. Client is moving from QAD to SAP and they need someone to administer and support the existing MFG/PRO implementation. Experience with both MFG/PRO and Progress necessary."

Short QAD Project in Akron/Canton, Ohio area

Let me emphasize short; one-month maximum. They say they want someone to design a custom front-end for their MFG-PRO application, customer service and sales module. Rates are around $60-70/hour DOE.

Good contract if you are between gigs, but don't "quit your day job" over this one. There is no promise or even a hint from the client that this could lead to more work.

What's it gonna take?

I was just reminiscing the other day about my leap into the world of contracting in 1997. I was pretty pleased that it resulted in a 15% increase in my compensation, even though I was thrown into a cubicle in an IT center with 50+ other contractors.

But I was even more pleased when I was recruited for an even better position 9 month's later for effectively a 70% increase over that starting salary. I was back in my area of expertise -- Progress programming -- and I started working on projects where my knowledge and skills were in far greater demand.

So I hope people doing Progress Programming now, 10 years later, can see in this little narrative of mine a reason to consider jumping at the contract position I've recently posted, especially those working for, say, a certain local paint/chemical company? This position is for a large firm, but the chosen contractor would be part of a smaller, "elite team", if you will, and not just a body-shop hired hand. You deserve a break and a chance to distinguish yourself.

Recently, through negotiations, the rate for this 6-month contract has gone up; I would say the minimum rate is around $55/hour all-inclusive, and I stress that is a minimum. Use the link in the sidebar to send me your resume. Let's work on this together; I look forward to hearing from you!
